Q&A with Amitai Pati

APO's Rebecca Hendl-Smith talks to Amitai Pati, ahead of his appearance with us at The Trusts Community Foundation Opera in Concert: APO at the Opera – Tales of Passion and Betrayal

Where did you grow up and where are you based now?
I grew up in Mangere, South Auckland and I'm currently based here in NZ during the current situation.

Tell us about your musical background? Have you always wanted to be an Opera superstar?
Initially, I wanted to pursue medicine. I was told that I’d chosen two of the most difficult subjects to study so I made a decision based on my gut feeling.

Music just felt natural to me. I grew up in a musical family/environment so it made a lot of sense and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve also wanted to be a food critic…mostly so I can eat as much as possible!

As a singer, music is obviously very important to you. Do you play any musical instruments?
I learned to play the piano and picked up the guitar through watching and learning from my family.

Any funny stories you can share from your travels and touring? Behind the scenes of ‘Sol3 Mio’ gossip perhaps?
There are plenty of stories; almost too many, I’d say. I’d need to ask permission from the people involved...which usually means these are great stories. But you’ll just have to ask us in person!

How have you been passing the time during the lockdowns this year?
I’ve been learning music, exercising, cooking, keeping up with my family and hanging out with friends, when I can. I still have engagements lined up so music learning is still at the forefront.

What do you like to do when you’re not making music?
Anything that keeps my hands busy. Cooking, cleaning, building something, driving somewhere or just chilling at home with a video game (good way to keep in touch with friends, as well). The gym is also my quiet time so I try going as much as I can.

What makes you happiest?
Being secure. I am at my happiest when I know I have a regime that I can stick to and know that it makes me a better person. At the moment, I have a good routine that gets me out of bed in the morning with a goal in mind, every time.

I utilise my time as efficiently as possible and I get a kick out of knowing that I’ve not wasted a lot of time being idle. Being the best version of myself means I am at my best for my family and friends and THAT makes me extremely happy.

What might surprise people to know about you?
Amitai is actually my middle name. My parents have always called me by my middle name (grandfather’s name) and I’ve not really used anything else. Amitai is one of two middle names that I have.
