The APO Society comprises the permanent musicians of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. The orchestra was founded and organised in 1980 by the musicians themselves under the legal entity of the Auckland Philharmonia Society Inc. For the first 25 years of the orchestra’s history, the Society delegated financial responsibility to the Board of Advisors and Management whilst retaining responsibility for artistic issues. The Society remains one of two major stakeholders within the Auckland Philharmonia Trust structure following a major structural change in 2005, the other being the Auckland Philharmonia Foundation, the capital assets fund of the orchestra. The Society, through various committees, continues to have substantial input into artistic and operational outcomes of the Orchestra, and continues to represent the musicians’ interests.
