Zarathustra

Eckehard Stier  CONDUCTOR
Gunilla Süssmann PIANO

Programme:
Mark-Anthony Turnage    Scherzoid
Mozart                                  Piano Concerto in D Minor K466
R. Strauss                           Also sprach Zarathustra

In this concert, we transport you to three extraordinary sound worlds.

British contemporary composer Mark-Anthony Turnage wrote his bustling, bluesy Scherzoid for the New York Philharmonic. It provides the perfect foil to the performance of Mozart’s dramatic piano concerto by Norwegian pianist Gunilla Süssmann, winner of the Robert Levin Festival prize .

There are few themes as memorable as Strauss’s fanfare from Also Sprach Zarathustra, in which trumpets and timpani proclaim a vision of eternal truth.  Made most famous by the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, this powerful statement of triumph heralds the second half of what promises to be a memorable season opening.
