The Full Works
You’ve heard Richard Gill unwrap the music. Now delve deeper and hear the full works. We’ve created a new series to present the three ‘unwrapped’ masterworks in concert alongside other orchestral favourites. Select the three Unwrap concerts plus their mainstage counterparts to take advantage of our six-concert Full Works package price.
All concerts are at Auckland Town Hall.
Unwrap1 PLUS full work in Enigma Variations
Elgar’s masterwork takes centre stage in this concert. Richard Gill has shown how Elgar builds from the tiniest scrap of melody: now hear the whole piece unfold, from the quiet opening, to Elgar’s affectionate pictures of his friends, and its ebullient finale. The other works we hear are Douglas Lilburn’s evocative Aotearoa Overture, composed when he was studying in London, and Béla Bartók’s Violin Concerto No.2, the soul of Hungarian folk music. It is played by Benjamin Schmid, a huge success with the APO in 2014.
Unwrap Enigma Variations: 6.30pm, Thursday 21 May
The Full Work: 8pm Thursday 18 June
Unwrap 2 PLUS full work in Musical Treasures
You’ve heard Richard Gill pluck The Firebird, but hearing this magical piece in full is a whole new experience: Stravinsky’s fabulous score will carry you away. APO In the full Musical Treasures concert, Principal Cellist Elia Sakakushev-von Bismarck also plays two delightful miniatures by Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi, before we hear Beethoven’s sunny Symphony No.4. This concert is a treasure chest of humour, magic and the joy of life.
Unwrap The Firebird: 6.30pm, Thursday 13 August
The Full Work: 8pm, Thursday 1 October
Unwrap 3 PLUS full work in Virtuoso Violin
Bruch’s intoxicating blend of romance and Gyspy fire calls for a player of pyrotechnic élan, and Viviane Hagner is that player. She is unquestionably an international star, and she will give a performance to remember. In the same concert, Gustav Mahler’s astonishing first symphony tells stories of love, death, nature; and it ends with the sheer elation of being alive. Stupendous, overpowering, exhilarating, it will sweep you away.
Unwrap: Bruch Violin Concerto 6.30pm, Thursday 10 September
The Full Work: 8pm, Thursday 8 October
Unwrap the Music concerts are sold with standard allocated seating, excluding Stalls level cabaret tables. Full Works concerts limited to A reserve only, with seating allocated at APO discretion.
APO Mystery package
For just $75 you receive tickets to three concerts selected by APO, from the full range of our concert offerings.
Let us know your preferences (though we can’t guarantee to be able to fill them) and we’ll advise you of your seats at least 10 days before each concert – and further ahead if we can.
Seats will be allocated on a best-available basis – you could find yourself sitting in Premier or A reserve seating for your three concerts.
Take a Punt package
$90. You pick your choice of any three concerts from The New Zealand Herald Premier Series, the Newstalk ZB Sources of Inspiration series or the Bayleys Great Classics series only.
Your seats are allocated only in the week of the concert and are subject to seat availability in that week. The upside is cheap tickets to APO mainstage concerts and the possibility that you may sit in some of the best seats in the house if they are not already purchased. The “punt” is that there may not be tickets available, in which case we discuss with you a transfer to another concert.
*Available only to people new to the APO database
Not just for newbies, our family package enables you to introduce family members to the power of live orchestral music – in a number of different concert styles. For $150 you can book five tickets for each of three concerts, selecting from:
